The Urban Farming Outreach (UFO) near down town Amarillo is an ideal location to reach the local community. With the development of an aquaponics food production system, YWAM Amarillo/Canyon is providing produce for local feeding ministries in the community (High Plains Food Bank and Faith City Mission) and demonstrating the love of Jesus to the local homeless community. We provide fresh produce to the those in need as well as coffee, prayer, and discipleship.
While our newest ministry focus is on Urban Farming, our aquaponics ministry began with and continues to serve those in developing nations. To date, our implementation projects have been carried out in North Central Mexico. Since 2014 we have collaborated with YWAM Creel (Chihuahua, Mexico) to build aquaponics systems for Christian leaders in the Tarahumara Indian tribe. These systems are being used to train & equip leaders who will then be able to share aquaponics technology with others in their tribe as they reach out to those who have yet to be reached with the gospel. Due to the poor growing conditions and persistent drought in this area of Mexico, the Tarahumaras (especially children) have suffered greatly from malnutrition in recent years. We and YWAM Creel see aquaponics as being a God-sent tool to reverse the curse of famine and poverty in this region.
