YWAM Amarillo/Canyon

Currently, YWAM Amarillo is focused on Urban Farming Outreach in the Amarillo/Canyon area. With the development of an aquaponics food production system near downtown Amarillo, YWAM Amarillo/Canyon is providing produce for local feeding ministries in the community (High Plains Food Bank and Faith City Mission) and demonstrating the love of Jesus to the local homeless community and the food insecure.

“Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.”
Isaiah 58:10

Director, Danny Atkisson, wife Joy and 4 kids, joined YWAM Amarillo/Canyon in 2018. They worked with YWAM in Chico, CA for 5 years and Danny served on staff as worship leader with a church in South Bend, IN before God directed their family to Canyon, TX. Danny and Joy have had a heart for discipleship and agriculture for over a decade.

Founders, Jimmy and Teresa Heisler, are Amarillo natives who served as a YWAM missionaries in Mexico from 2006 to 2011. Before that, they were in full time ministry for 10 years as a youth pastors at Freedom Fellowship Church in Canyon, TX.  During this time they lead several short-term mission trips to Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico. Upon returning to Texas, Jimmy and Teresa felt God calling them to continue serving with YWAM in the Amarillo/Canyon area. To that end, they sought God’s direction, vision and timing for this work and pioneered the ministry and development of YWAM Amarillo/Canyon.

YWAM International

Youth With A Mission is an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced “WHY-wham”), our purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known.

When YWAM began in 1960, our main focus was giving young people opportunities to demonstrate the love of Jesus to the whole world, according to His command in Mark 16:15. Today, we still focus on youth, but we have members (known as YWAMers) of almost every age and many of our short-term efforts have grown into long-term endeavors that have impacted lives and nations.

YWAM has a decentralized structure that encourages new vision and the exploration of new ways to change lives through training, convey the message of the gospel and care for those in need. We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 180 countries, with a staff of over 18,000.
